While there are many different ways to catch trout on a fly, the strategies I'll talk about here are the ones that have worked for me, and those I've fished with, over the past 20 plus years of chasing still water trout. Why is there more than one strategy? For one thing, it's because there are all kinds of different waters that fall into the category of still water.
Yet another variable is the food sources that still waters offer. Some are lush with insect life. Others are more barren of insects, but may have minnows or terrestrials that interest the trout. Then there are all the different times of day and seasons of the year which may require a bit different approach. All of these things come into play when we're talking about trout tactics. Are these the only techniques that will work? No! And they aren't necessarily the best bets for your favorite lake. Nor are they all inclusive. That's not possible, as there is always a better way to fool a fish. Half of the fun is finding the ones that work for yourself. But as a start, these are my go-to tactics, the ones I use first. Periodically, you'll notice new article links appear on this page. I hope you find them helpful in your quest to catch more and bigger trout. |
